What Are Allergens and How Do They Effect You

sneezing-chIf you’re one of the millions of people who have allergies, chances are you have suffered from sneezing, itchy eyes, and a pounding head all because you came in contact with pesky little nasties called allergens. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), many indoor spaces harbor more pollutants and allergens than the air outside. To conserve energy, buildings today are tightly sealed, but this limits ventilation and encourages the presence of allergens and other pollutants.

Common allergens found inside are:

  • Pet dander (old skin cells that are much smaller than human dandruff)
  • Pollen
  • Grass
  • Mold
  • Dust mites (tiny critters that live in dust)

How To Reduce Allergens In Your Home

These pesky little triggers cause your allergies to flare up. That’s all it takes to spark an allergy attack. But you can outsmart them.

While certain medications can help allergy-sufferers, the best way to treat allergies is to eliminate the allergens that are causing the reaction. HVAC filters are designed to trap airborne particles, so it’s important to clean or replace air filters every month, but don’t sweep which can send allergens into the air. Instead, use a damp mop and a vacuum with a HEPA filter to trap allergens. With pets, you may need to clean or change your HVAC filters more often. In homes with allergy-sufferers, it’s important to have sufficient ventilation and to keep humidity from becoming too high or too low. Balancing indoor humidity levels with a humidifier and increasing the flow of fresh air with an energy-recovery ventilator will keep indoor air pollution from harming you and your loved ones.
